Keyboard Shortcuts

Now we'll move to the complete list. Every shortcut in Cocoa is here, grouped the way the Settings › Shortcuts tab groups them. The same list is in the app as a filterable sheet — Help › Keyboard Shortcuts (⌘/), or the keyboard icon in the toolbar — and every one of them can be changed in Settings › Shortcuts (chapter 14).

Type in the filter ① to narrow the list to a word — "page", "pen", "zoom" — and press Escape or click Done ③ to close it.

Keys that are not shortcuts

Some keys do something because of where the cursor is, and cannot be rebound:

Tab and Shift-Tab move between table cells; Return in a table moves to the cell below; on squared paper Tab moves to the next square.
Return on an empty bullet ends the list.
⌘-click on a link opens it; a plain click edits its words.
Escape clears the search field, then the scope; closes sheets; puts down a pen.
Delete in an empty search field widens the scope; in the Library it trashes the selected note or asks about a folder.
Space in a study session reveals or flips a card; 1 to 4 grade it; S skips.
In this guide window, Previous and Next are Command-Left Arrow and Command-Right Arrow.
Command-comma opens Settings, as in every Mac app.

Summary

⌘/ shows this list inside the app; Settings › Shortcuts changes any of them.
Formatting uses Command and Shift-Command; headings use Control-Command with a digit; pens use Control with a digit.
Page and note navigation use ⌥⌘ with an arrow.

Common mistakes

Reading ⌃⌘1 as Command-1 — Command-1 is Continuous mode; headings need Control too.
Expecting ⌘+ to change the text size — it zooms the page.
Pressing ⌥⌘F for search — that is Find and Replace in the open note; search everything is ⇧⌘F.

Best practices

Learn five first: ⌘O, ⇧⌘F, ⇧⌘P, ⌃⌘1, ⌃1.
Rebind rather than memorise — if a chord fights your muscle memory, change it in Settings.
Keep Quick Capture on ⌥Space unless another app has claimed it.
